Learning Objectives

The Learning Objectives for this course are:

1. To improve patient care in anaphylaxis by providing practical support for compliance with the Acute Anaphylaxis Clinical Care Standard (AACCS).
2. To increase awareness of the national standard for anaphylaxis care: the Acute Anaphylaxis Clinical Care Standard (AACCS).
3. To assist healthcare professionals (HCPs) and health service organisations (HSOs) to identify and implement the requirements of the AACCS that are relevant to their practice.
4. To assist HCPs and HSOs to identify the components of the ASCIA Acute Management of Anaphylaxis Guidelines and the AACCS that should be incorporated into an Anaphylaxis Emergency Management Practice Framework (AEMPF).
5. To assist HCPs and HSOs to choose and implement anaphylaxis training appropriate to their requirements, including meaningful scenarios and drills.
6. To assist HCPs and HSOs to establish appropriate documentation and processes for maintaining ongoing compliance and training.

Module 1 – Introduction to the Anaphylaxis Emergency Management Toolkit

In Module 1 we will discuss:

• Building an Anaphylaxis Emergency Management Practice Framework.
• Introduction to the national standard of care for anaphylaxis – the Acute Anaphylaxis Clinical Care Standard.
• Some important statistics concerning anaphylaxis.
• Some sample aims and objectives for your framework.
• Some CPD activities that may be available.
• Conducting a practice audit for anaphylaxis management.
• The six-step process in the course.

Module 2 – Step no 1 Understanding the AACCS and Why Compliance is Required

In Module 2 we will discuss:

• What is the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC).
• What is the role of the ACSQHC?
• What is a clinical care standard?
• Why the AACCS was established.
• Who the AACCS considers to be a clinician and what is an HSO.
• The Pathway of Care for the AACCS.
• When do HCPs and HCOs need to comply with the AACCS by.

Module 3 – Step no 2 The Three Steps for Effective Staff Training

In Module no 3 we will discuss:

• Inserting the Staff Training into the Anaphylaxis Emergency Management Practice Framework (AEMPF).
• Understanding the “Growth in Knowledge of Anaphylaxis Causation and Management” graph.
• The Knowledge Gap.
• The Pyramid of Clinical Competency.
• What constitutes “Best Practice” in anaphylaxis management.
• The principles of complying with the AACCS.
• Step 1 – obtaining staff buy-in.
• The aim in staff training I anaphylaxis management.
• Step 2- Choosing appropriate training.

Step 3 conducting the training. 

Module 4 – Step no 3 Applying the Training to Fulfil the Requirements of the  AACCS

In Module no 4 we will discuss

• The six Quality Statements in the AACCS.
• A brief overview of anaphylaxis.
• What is meant by the concept of “Foundations” in anaphylaxis.
• The 4 pathological processes in anaphylaxis.
• The concept of “Clinical Chess” in anaphylaxis management.
• How to use the AACCS.
• The requirements for HCPs and HSOs in relation to Quality Statement (QS) no 1.
• Summary of both clinician and HSO requirements in QS no1.
• Identifying a clinical pathway for anaphylaxis management.

Module 5 – Steps no 4, 5 and 6

In Module no 5 we will discuss:

• Step no 4 Using Scenarios and Drills to test the Framework.
  • Resources for running a scenario.
  • The roles of different staff members when writing and conducting a scenario.
  • Writing a comprehensive scenario that addresses the AACCS requirements and incorporates refractory anaphylaxis management from the ASCIA guidelines.
  • Assessing the drill requirements of the Quality Statements.
  • Debriefing after the scenario.
